Just Follow Your Heart

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

Matthew 15:19

You’ve heard it, every dad has. Mom’s revert to it as a source of comfort, and every princess movie out there has a young woman following her heart to achieve some dream or destiny.

Well I personally am sick and tired of it. Christian parents need to be digging into the scripture and find out God’s destiny and raise our children in the way they should go (proverbs 22:6).

The fall in Genesis 3 brought on a condition to humanity that was not our intended purpose. When Adam ate of the tree sin fell upon him and that sin has been passed down ever since. From father to son, from mother to daughter sin and misery is our natural state of being.

Romans 5:18 says “ One trespass led to condemnation for all men.

That is our natural state now. We don’t have to be taught how to take what we want, be mean, slap at people we don't like as children. As parents we have to teach our kids how to share, be nice, and keep their hands to themselves. The bad comes naturally because we’re born with it.

For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners Romans 5:19

None is righteous, no, not one Romans 3:10

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive men Psalm 51:5

It is over and over throughout scripture that we are born sinful. It is part of the curse and the only way out of that curse is our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.

Getting that little bit of history on the subject, and it is just a little, do you think our hearts can be trusted to make decisions without our guide book. I don’t.

Jeremiah says in chapter 17 verse 9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it?

Mark 7:21-23 “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

That’s what Jesus said about the human heart’s desire.

We as christian need to be moving away from the “Follow Your Heart” method of guiding and into the “Follow God’s Word” method.

His desire is far better than our own. As nice and christiany as I try to be I still sin because I will on occasion listen to my own desires over God’s. It’s easier, its an easy walk down the trail, but that trail ends at a cliff and you can’t turn back around. The only way off is to jump head first into the guilt, shame, and misery I create be my disobedient actions.

OR.

I can take myself to scripture, I can walk onto the hard trail that goes up and down with its twists and turns, stumble, get up, keep pushing, but that trail ends in the High Country with beautiful views and worship of an almighty savior.

Following your heart will get you nowhere. It will make you dumber and you just end up looking like the world around you.

Following God’s Word is hard. People make fun of you and according to them you look like a lunatic, but the difference is. You will hear well done my good and faithful servant, and they will hear depart from me, I never knew you.

Which do you want to hear?
