Solus Christus

Solus Christus

“Man’s nature … is a perpetual factory of idols… Man’s mind, full as it is of pride and boldness, dares to imagine a god according to its own capacity.”  John Calvin

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”  Exodus 20:3

An idol is anything that takes the place of God as the most important focus and priority in our life.  This can be sports, our career, friends, family, hobbies, even religion itself can become an idol.  Yes, even church, or things within it, can become an idol.  These idols take the place of God within our lives and can cause us to not focus on Him or, at the least, take our thoughts off of who God really is.  This is unfortunately how Satan manipulates us and leads us astray.  As mentioned in the first devotional on the 5 solas, Sola Scriptura, everything we believe rests on the scriptures.  It is not on our opinions, our traditions, the thoughts of others, or anything else… only on God’s word!  “Sola Scriptura”…

So what do the scriptures say about Jesus Christ?

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

Luke 4:41

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3

And he said unto them, thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Luke 24:46-47

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.

John 6:44

As scripture clearly shows… Christ is the only way to salvation. If we are not focused on scripture alone, we can easily be led wrongfully down a path that has us thinking that we must earn our salvation.  But, as scripture clearly shows, our salvation is through Him alone and by Him alone!  It is not through baptism, the taking of communion, our church attendance, our prayers, or anything else.  It is not Christ “plus” something either.  It is only by Christ alone!  Solus Christus!
